Dec 3 - Acts, Part 1

Throughout Jesus’s ministry on earth, He performed many miracles that absolutely blew peoples’ minds. He raised the dead, healed the sick, and was crucified and rose again three days later, for goodness sake! What could be more incredible than that? Once Jesus left Earth and ascended to Heaven again, surely there were people who thought they would never witness anything that amazing again. How could they feel close to Jesus now that He’s no longer on the Earth? And many of us wonder today, “Where are the moments that will rock our world and make us feel so close to Jesus that we’re covered in goose bumps?” The answer to that came on the day of Pentecost:

Acts 2:2-4 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

How’s that for a miracle?? The Lord placed the Holy Spirit into them and allowed them to speak languages they had never known before so they could share the Gospel with others. They had not prayed specifically for that to happen, but because they were faithful and open to moving where the Lord sent them, He was able to use them for these purposes.

We need to pray that the Holy Spirit will use us in whatever way God chooses. He uses those who are willing to reach people who need saved. These instances won’t always surface in flashy ways like tongues of fire and the ability to speak a new language, but it will be just as powerful. In another story, Phillip obeyed a subtle nudge from the Spirit and helped a man to understand the scriptures:

Acts 8:29-31
The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”
Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.
“How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

We don’t need to pray that God will show us lame men able to walk or blind men able to see. We have the Holy Spirit in us – that is incredible! God will allow us to be an active part of his kingdom in ways that are just as exciting as what was experienced during Jesus’s time! With the help of the Holy Spirit, each of us is capable of drawing others to the Lord, or planting the seeds that will get them there, every day. Just be willing and obedient to the Holy Spirit and He will show you amazing things.
