Dec. 8 - Serve, Part 3
God designed Christ to be the head of the church, so when He isn’t allowed that position, the church suffers. In some churches, members of leadership present themselves higher than the people they should be serving. They sit in places of honor, they must be addressed in a particular way, they alone make the final judgment on what is or isn’t sin. This may be viewed as respect or tradition in many churches, but it deviates from what scripture tells us.
Ephesians 4:11-16 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
At Newstart, our leadership strives to make Christ the priority, allowing Him to be the head of our church. They never aim to knowingly contradict His teachings. They recognize that leadership should be the greatest of servants. But this doesn’t mean that Greg, Desiree, Nate, and Dawn should be the only ones to serve us. As each of us progresses along our spiritual journey and we find ourselves in positions of leadership, our servanthood should increase too.
Mark 10:43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant
Jesus’s mission was to seek and save the lost and to serve others and, as followers of Christ, we should make that our goal too. The Holy Spirit works in us so that we can work in the world. Each one of us is accountable for how we live and serve, so what are you waiting for? To get involved in one of our church ministries, text “Serve” to 33777 for more information.
