June 7 - People of Abundance, Part 3
There are times in life when we feel completely surrounded by enemies. These days, it feels like those enemies are just getting closer and closer. A virus on our left, prejudice and hatred on our right. Job loss and economic strain behind us, fear and chaos up ahead. Where can we turn to even catch our breath and get a moment of peace?
Over the past three weeks, we have had that question answered in the form of Psalm 23. We have been reminded of our lack for nothing, restful green pastures, quiet waters, and refreshment for our souls. This week verse 5 shows us God’s abundance in the face of the many enemies that surround us.
Psalm 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
God prepares a table before us in the presence of our enemies. This isn’t a tiny, two-seat table tucked in the corner of a diner by the bathrooms. This is a vast, expansive banquet table covered end to end in a mouth-watering feast. Picture the winding table in Dr. Seuss’s Whoville, heaped with everything from to the Who-pudding and Who-hash all the way down to the roast beast.
When it feels like opposition, affliction, and adversaries are closing in on you, that table is what God lays out before you. The Heavenly Father is completely undaunted by our enemies and will provide relief from fear if you’ll allow yourself to take your eyes off your issues and focus on Him instead. In the face of fear, God showers us with comfort, peace, provision, and abundance.
By freeing us up from our fears, He gives us the space to get back to our mission of seeking and saving the lost. Our loving Father gives us a cup that overflows so we can fill the cups of others. Don’t allow your enemies to distract you from that mission.
