Romans Recap and Start of Chapter 8
Note:This is not the normal teaching article I would post. These are only the Unedited notes I carried into the pulpit. Please be sure to listen to or watch the teaching, as much of what I teach is not in these notes.
ONE: TITLE SLIDE ILL: Barcelona Subway………………………
Mari and I were in Barcelona in 2015…
I knew there were multiple things we should see:
the view from the Ferris wheel is the best view of the city,
the Gothic Quarter for its architecture,
Park Güell to see Gaudí’s strange, beautiful imagination applied to a public park,
and Sagrada Família, the famous church everyone comes to see.
TWO: So I grabbed a map of the underground metro, marked the stops where we needed to go down into the tunnels and where to come back up to see the famous sites.
THREE: VIDEO OF SUBWAY
Can I talk about Barcelona for an hour?
Yes.
Can I regale you with my stories from each of those famous places?
Absolutely.
FOUR:
Do I know Barcelona?
Nope. EXPOUND ON THIS AND REFER TO THE MAPS ON THE SCREEN

THAT IS EXACTLY HOW WE TREAT ROMANS…..
FIVE - SUBWAY MAP OF ROMANS:
CROWD PARTICIPATION riding the Romans Subway
Romans 3:23
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 5:8
But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
Romans 10:13
For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Romans 12:2
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
–—-------------
The church in Rome had already been around a while.
It was a mix of Jewish and Gentile followers of Jesus.
Then, in 49 AD, the emperor Claudius kicked the Jews out of Rome.
About five years later, Claudius died, and the Jews started making their way back.
Paul had not been there yet, but he cared about what was happening there.
How do we know this?
Acts 18:1–3
Then Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. 2 There he became acquainted with a Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, who had recently arrived from Italy with his wife, Priscilla. They had left Italy when Claudius Caesar deported all Jews from Rome. 3 Paul lived and worked with them, for they were tentmakers just as he was.
That meant the church in Rome kept going for five years without its Jewish believers.
So when they came back, the church in Rome was more Gentile in the way it lived things out.
So yeah, there was tension.
People argued about
what following Jesus was supposed to look like.
Sabbath.
Kosher food.
Circumcision….FUNNY
For the sake of the gospel, he wanted the church unified.
Because the good news of Jesus brings people together,
and because their unity mattered for Paul’s mission. He saw that the church in Rome could become a launching point for taking the gospel farther west.
So Paul sat down and wrote out his longest explanation of the gospel with these those purposes in mind! –—-------------
SIX - SLIDE OF THIS 7 CHAPTER OVERVIEW
Chapter 1: Non Jews are trapped in sin
Chapter 2: Jews are in worse shape
Chapter 3: All are guilty, God’s response = Jesus
22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. 23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
Chapter 4: Objective: Multi-ethnic family. Saved by Faith in Jesus
Chapter 5: The Larger story starts. Adam = Humanity
Jesus= New Humanity:
God has made a new family rescuing and restoring humans
Chapter 6: Baptism reminds you that you have joined in the new creation
1 Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? 2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? 3 Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? 4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.
Chapter 7: God’s plan: Torah revealed that laws and rules could not change the heart (Climax at the end of 7)
EIGHT - SLIDE OF SCRIPTURE REFERENCE
Romans 7:21-25
21 I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. 22 I love God’s law with all my heart. 23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? 25 Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.
FINAL SLIDE - SLIDE OF SCRIPTURE REFERENCE AND PARTIAL SCRIPTURE
8:1-2
So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.
NOT GUILTY!
The Law could not do that!
2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.
Genesis 1:1-3a: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
Then God said…
Genesis 2:7 Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.
Ezekiel 37:9-10Then he said to me, “Speak a prophetic message to the winds, son of man. Speak a prophetic message and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, O breath, from the four winds! Breathe into these dead bodies so they may live again.’”
So I spoke the message as he commanded me, and breath came into their bodies. They all came to life and stood up on their feet—a great army.
Matthew 1:18 -while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:3-9
3 The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. 4 He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.
5 Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. 6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. 7 For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. 8 That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.
9 But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you.
YOU ARE NOT SAVED BY WORKS. YOU ARE SAVED FOR WORKS.
Salvation is not about you.
You are a part of what salvation is about.
